Kindergarten Prep is in FULL SWING for Livingston County Parents

By Autumn J. Moricz February 28, 2025

Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone for both children and parents. It marks the beginning of a child's formal education journey and sets the foundation for future learning.

Here are some tips to help you prepare your child for kindergarten:

1. Visit the School

Take your child to visit the school before the first day. Familiarizing them with the environment can ease any anxiety they might have.

2. Establish a Routine

Create a consistent daily routine that includes regular meal times, bedtime, and playtime. This helps your child adjust to the structured schedule of school.

3. Encourage Independence

Teach your child basic self-care skills like dressing themselves, using the bathroom independently, and washing their hands. These skills will be important in kindergarten.

4. Read Together

Reading to your child every day helps develop their language skills and fosters a love for books. It also introduces them to new vocabulary and concepts.

5. Play and Learn

Engage your child in educational play activities that promote problem-solving, creativity, and social skills. Simple games, puzzles, and building blocks are great options.

6. Communicate with Teachers

Stay in touch with your child's teachers to understand their progress and any areas where they might need extra support. Open communication helps address any concerns early on.

7. Encourage Social Interaction

Arrange playdates with other children to help your child develop social skills and make new friends. Social interaction is a key part of kindergarten.

8. Be Positive and Supportive

Show enthusiasm and positivity about your child's new adventure.

Your attitude can greatly influence how they feel about starting school.
