Spring Cleaning the Innermost Part of Your Home

Why you should clean your AIR DUCTS & VENTS

By Autumn J. Moricz March 14, 2024

Spring is in the air. With the fresh air outside we start to look to how we can clean and freshen the inside of our home.

If you are like me, you have seen DOZENS of posts on social media of companies offering Air Duct and vent cleaning services. Also like me, you may have felt like the people in these posts were part of some type of scam.

Many posts used the same photos, were worded strangely and claimed to be a local couple struggling with their business.

I reached out to local realtors and contractors in our community asking for a preferred company that they personally recommend to their customers and family.

Pure Mitten was at the top of many lists. I reached out and was happy to find that they were very informative.

My basic questions were answered.

Do my air ducts need cleaning?

It may be time if:

 - It's been 2-5 years since your last duct cleaning.

 - You have dogs, cats, or other pets.

 - Anyone in the home has allergies or asthma.

 - You've had home construction/remodeling work.

 - You smell musty or stale odors when your furnace or AC is running.

 - You notice dust on your furniture shortly after cleaning.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?

Air ducts should be cleaned every 2-5 years. If you have allergies or asthma, pets, or do frequent remodeling, your ducts should be cleaned every 2-3 years.

What are the benefits of air duct cleaning?

Regular air duct cleaning reduces the dust and pet allergens with your home, improves your indoor air quality, helps your heating and cooling appliances to run more efficiently, making them last longer and reducing your energy bills.

I scheduled a service so I could experience their services for myself. I asked many questions to make sure I was prepared.

How should I prepare for my air duct cleaning appointment?

Our technicians will need to access your furnace and ducts, and all of the supply and return registers in your home, so please ensure those areas are accessible the day of your service appointment. Do not remove vent covers; we use specialized tools designed to fit through the covers so there's no need to remove them. We will need to turn off your HVAC system while we are cleaning so just beware of that and dress accordingly. Please secure any and all pets before our technicians arrive.

How long does air duct cleaning take?

From start to finish, residential air duct cleaning can take between 1 1/2 hours to 4 hours, depending on the HVAC layout and size of the home.

What is your air duct cleaning process?

First, our techs block off all registers. Then they attach our extraction hose to your main return trunk line, creating negative pressure. Next, they go to all return vents and use compressed air blown through rods and whips to agitate dust and debris, pushing everything toward our extraction hose. After the returns are cleaned, they continue the same process to clean the supply side of your HVAC system. Once the supplies are cleaned, they use a fogger to sanitize and deodorize the entire system.

There was little to no disturbance within the home. Only one air hose was brought in, while a larger tubing remained outside the home.

One crew member focused on the vents while the other prepped the duct work around the furnace.

What kind of equipment do you use?

We use high-powered, truck-mounted Powervac equipment which produces more suction (16,000 cfm) and more agitation (175 psi) than standard portable duct cleaning equipment.

What do you use to sanitize and deodorize the air ducts?

We use EnviroCon to sanitize and Ultra Odor Kill Super Concentrate to deodorize. These products are applied using a dual fogger when we finish cleaning your air ducts. Safety Data Sheets for each product can be provided via email upon request.
