South Lyon Drop-In

Our Local Favorites

By Autumn J. Moricz August 9, 2023

Do you explore your town? What about the surrounding communities within your county?

I encourage you to head to your main street without a set goal or purpose, just to wander.

My son and I found ourselves in South Lyon the other day. We became tourists in the community. We wandered in and out of shops, popped in to an ice cream shop for a sweet treat and then wrapped up at a local park.

Conversation and fun with my youngest while we discovered some new favorites.

We parked in one of the public lots off Lafayette street. There is a fair amount of parking available throughout the downtown.

Venue South Lyon caught my eye as I have 3 teenagers in the house (and my pre teen) that are always on the lookout for unique t-shirts. I loved the vintage appeal (Farmer Jack, Eastern Market and vintage inspired sports tees). We already have plans to head back before school starts for everyone to pick out some new rock band t shirts.

For the moms out there, I cannot say enough about the selection of jeans that Venue has. I was pleased to find they carry two of my favorite brands, KUT and LIVERPOOL. I discovered both of these jeans through the direct mail styling service Stitch Fix. While the jeans are more of an upscale price you cannot go wrong with their fit and sizing.

From there we walked over to Diane’s Doll House. My son was excited about the large selection of Playmobil. He has held on to his collection and loves seeing new sets.

But what really drew his attention were the Bruder toys. Bruder has collections of realistic toys that depict vehicles and equipment in agriculture, logging, trucking and more. He took a catalog home and has been planning out his future purchase. The store is filled with classic, imaginative toys.

Our next stop was South Lyon Cycle which is everything a small-town bike store should be. We were welcomed immediately, had our questions answered and checked out some really great bikes. My son plans to bike to middle school this year and was checking out all the accessories they have available.

Time for a snack at Curvin’s Creamery. I was excited for my son to try this ice cream. The flavor creations are endless and the ice cream base is created using liquid nitrogen to freeze it. An important note, this shop is great for families who have food allergies. Curvin’s offer peanut, tree nut and egg free options.

I had the Apple Pie ice cream and added some crunchy pecans. My son added Oreo and chocolate shavings to his vanilla ice cream. Both were creamy and delicious.

We ended our visit with a stop at McHattie Park, which is walking distance from the downtown area. Love all the options of equipment. Kids can spread out to play.

The park offers a We Go Swing which is accessible for those in a wheelchair.(For more information and a video on the We GO Swing click HERE)

There is plenty of shade to cool off, a covered pavilion to gather and a paved walking trail. The FREE Little Library is unique in design and draws kids in. There are also restroom facilities on site as well as parking adjacent to the playground.

Where will you pop in the next time you are in South Lyon?

We are looking forward to heading back to grab lunch at the South Lyon Hotel and explore some more of the shops downtown. South Lyon is also home to many great events throughout the year. Pumpkinfest and Movies in the Park are among our favorites.
